How to Add the Hijri Date to Your iPhone (Lock Screen and Home Screen)

The Hijri calendar marks the days that matter most to Muslims: Ramadan, the two Eids, the Day of Arafah and the white days of each month. Your iPhone shows the Gregorian date everywhere by default, but you can add the Hijri date in two ways.

Today's Hijri date (Umm al-Qura calendar)

Method 1: Turn on the Islamic calendar in Settings (built in, free)

iOS can show Hijri dates next to the normal dates in the Calendar app.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Calendar. On iOS 18 and later, tap Apps first, then Calendar.
  3. Tap Alternate Calendars.
  4. Choose Islamic.

Hijri dates now appear in small text in the Calendar app. Menu names can differ slightly between iOS versions.

Good for: checking the Hijri date when you open the Calendar app. Less good for: seeing it at a glance, because it stays inside the app.

Method 2: Use a widget that shows the Hijri date

Ayah Widget shows today's Hijri date using Apple's Umm al-Qura calendar, alongside a daily Quran verse and the countdown to the next prayer. Everything is visible on your Home Screen or Lock Screen without opening an app.

Add it to your Lock Screen

  1. Install Ayah Widget and open it once.
  2. Touch and hold the Lock Screen until Customize appears, then tap it.
  3. Tap Lock Screen, then the widget area below the time.
  4. Choose Ayah Widget and tap the widget you want, then tap Done.

Add it to your Home Screen

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the apps jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit, then Add Widget (on iOS 16 and 17, tap +).
  3. Search for Ayah Widget, choose a size and tap Add Widget.

Why your Hijri date may be one day different

Islamic months begin with the new crescent moon, and not every country starts them on the same day.

  • Umm al-Qura is the calendar used officially in Saudi Arabia. It is calculated in advance, so it can be shown on a phone.
  • Many countries start each month when the crescent is sighted locally, which can be a day earlier or later.

For everyday use the difference rarely matters. For the start of Ramadan and the Eids, follow the announcement in your country. Our Ramadan 2027 countdown shows the expected dates.

The new moons in the Quran

They ask thee, (O Muhammad), of new moons, say: They are fixed seasons for mankind and for the pilgrimage. It is not righteousness that ye go to houses by the backs thereof (as do the idolaters at certain seasons), but the righteous man is he who wardeth off (evil). So go to houses by the gates thereof, and observe your duty to Allah, that ye may be successful
